I am updating some very old directors chairs this week. The solid colors are the old pieces and are very heavy canvas. I am replacing them with a printed canvas from Art Gallery Fabrics One yard was plenty for both chairs.
Step One: remove the old covers. The seat piece has a slat of wood in each short end that I needed to save when I put the chairs back together. I just laid out the old pieces and measured the width and height and added inches to allow for folds and hems.
Step Two: Hem each piece all the way around. I pressed each edge down 1/2 inch, then folded another inch for a nice sturdy, wide hem that I could double stitch in place.
Step Three: Fold in and stitch down sides to match the size of existing pieces. Make sure the folds are wide enough for the wooden slats to slide back in on the seat. Stitch in place. This is a picture of the top pieces. repeat for the seat piece.
Step Four: replace the wood slats in the seat piece and put the chairs back together.
